There is a wonderful food publication where I live. Definitely the target markets are mid-upper scale consumers who love cooking and going to restaurants. These are busy business people who have money to spend.

The magazine has TENS OF THOUSANDS of readers. This magazine hits the target consumer right on the nose. These readers are "passionately interested in good food and drink."

Which is why their recent back page advertiser made me laugh.

Full page ad. (BACK PAGE NO LESS) Which means it cost over $4,000.

What did the high-end cooking store advertise?

That if you filled out the coupon (and BROUGHT IT TO THE STORE) you would have a CHANCE to win ONE $70 salt and pepper grinder set. I mean ONE for the entire store. ONE for the entire promotion.

1 lousy little salt and pepper set for a potential audience of TENS OF THOUSANDS.

I don't get it.

Drop over $4,000 plus whatever they paid to get a graphic designer to create the ad...and then only offer a CHANCE to win ONE little salt and pepper set ($70 value) to people who are willing to drive for an hour to come to their store?

I call it "McCustomer Kind Of Thinking"

Would You Drive Across Town To MAYBE Win Salt and Pepper Shakers?

I don't think so.

Don't think your customers get excited about the unexcitable.

Promotions are important to selling. Absolutely. But they have to be promotions that actually MEAN something to your customer.

A promotion has to create a sense of urgency, a sense of excitement, momentum - a "Ooh - I'd LOVE that!" kind of feeling.

What Would I Have Done With That Back Page Ad?

First of all I wouldn't have purchased a Full Back Page. I'd have purchased a HALF PAGE ad (with very cool design) with this offer:

And then after the first 200- I'd have something to offer THE REST of the customers that would REWARD THEM for taking the time to come to the store and encourage them to buy more.

Remember -the hard cost for the stupid salt and pepper set is probably $10.

Would it be worth spending $10 to attract a customer who will be put into your ezine database, who will probably spend an average of $100 or more per visit FOREVER and who will refer you to other high-end customers FOREVER?

YES!!!

So remember - when you're coming up with your next latest and greatest sales promotion...to actually think of WHAT YOUR CUSTOMER WOULD LIKE.

And don't get caught in the trap of small-term thinking vs. LONG TERM.

Remember - you want your customers to be "SLOW FOOD" kind of customers who will stick with you for the long haul.

As long as there have been weddings, there have been myths and superstitions to accompany them. Of course, like most things the ideas of myths and superstitions have come from far and wide the world. Some myths are lighthearted and gay, while there are some superstitions that can appear to be quite harsh.

Concerning rain on the day of the wedding, some say that many tears will be shed in the marriage, while others are thrilled as the occurrence of rain on a wedding day is considered to bring good luck and blessings to the lucky couple. Some even place a statue of the Virgin Mary in the windowsill to ward away rain and bad luck, while others may hang a rosary from the window or clothes line to insure a rain free wedding day. A rainy wedding day also foretells of many children to be born to the wedding couple.

2. Concerning myths and superstitions of a shoe and the wedding, long ago, the father would pass one shoe of the bride's to the groom to signify him giving his daughter away in marriage. It is also considered good luck for the groom's mother to throw a shoe at the bride as the couple leaves their reception so that the bride and her mother-in-law would forever be the best of friends. It is also considered to be good luck if a house cat eats from the brides shoe the week of her wedding. In addition, the bride must have a penny in her shoe while being married for good luck and wealth.

3. The brides wedding dress has its own myths and superstitions of colors and wearing. Long ago, it was considered good luck to have a piece of the wedding gown, so then the dress was literally ripped to pieces with the bride still in it. No dress was to be more becoming or longer than the brides wedding dress as she should be the center of attention on her wedding day and it brought good luck. It is considered unlucky for a groom to see his bride in her wedding dress as well as for her to try on the wedding dress more than one time after alterations. It is also good luck for the bride to enter the church of her wedding on her right foot, while walking down the aisle after the wedding, it is customary to remove both wedding rings to ensure there is no trouble for the couple should she remove them at a later time. As well, the bride should have all the bridesmaids sign the bottom of her shoe, and the name that has not been walked off is the next female to marry.

4. The wedding ring is considered sacred and should not be lent to others to try on, this is sure to bring back luck and even the possibility of unfaithfulness. If ever the wedding rings are removed by a bride it must be the groom who returns them to her fingers to continue the good luck.

The question is often asked by couples when choosing wedding favors, "what kind of quote or saying should we attach to the favor?"

With so many themed favors to choose from today the sweet sayings with a built-in symbolism are being used more and more. For example, by now you've definitely heard about and maybe have even seen the popular wedding favor "Perfect Pear," the favors are either two pear-shaped candles or two silver pear-shaped salt and pepper shakers.

If you want to avoid using a wedding favor every other couple is using then you may want to consider expanding on the popular ones to come up with your own creation.
Instead of pear-shaped favors think of other things that usually come in pairs.
Monogrammed pillowcases can be given as gifts with a sweet note such as: "Meant to be Together Forever" or you can take a set of salt and pepper shakers and paint a picture of a thong on each one. There you have the "perfect pair." This idea works great for a beach- themed wedding.

For heart shaped tins, candies, or other heart-shaped sentiments you can add the personal note: "Our Heart-Felt Thanks for Sharing our Special Day with Us" or "Thank You From The Bottom of our Hearts," "A Hearty Thank You to All Who Shared This Day."

Another idea might be to get small bottles of wedding bubbles and attach a Hershey Rosebud favor with a tag that says, "Blowing Kisses."

With any kind of a candle favor you might say, "The Light of our Love will Always Burn Bright" or "Our Love Shines Like an Eternal Flame."

If you are doing sweet edibles as a wedding favor which can include any type of your favorite candies or chocolates, you might say," When These Treats You Eat, Remember Our Love So Sweet" or "The True Flavor of our Love."

For a spring or summer garden wedding you can do monogrammed gloves with a note that says, "The Perfect Fit" or customized flower seed packs with a note saying, "Plant These Seeds and Watch Our Love Blossom and Grow" "Love In Bloom" or " Help us Plant These Seeds of Love" Your guests will reminisce about your wedding day whenever they don their gloves to tend their flower garden.

Following are a few more examples of sayings that can be attached to wedding favors:

Help our love grow together (use with plants or flowers)

Our love grows on (use with plants or flowers)

Celebrate our blossoming love (for flowers or Hershey rosebuds)

Our love is a perfect blend (for teas and coffee, cocoa)

The sweet fragrance of love (for soaps, potpourri)

The flame of our love will always burn bright (for candles)

A cupful of kisses (for Hershey kisses in a cup)

Perfect harmony (for music cd favors)

A Match made in heaven (for personalized matchbook favors)

These are just a few ideas to help you get started. Try to come up with some of your own sweet words. Close your eyes and imagine what you want your wedding day to look like, feel like, and sound like. Think about the love of your life and all of those who will come and celebrate with you. Now start writing down some phrases that come to mind. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you come up with on your own.

Then you realize that only five percent of your guests attend. Since save the date cards are a modern wedding idea they have not been included in wedding etiquette as of this time. However, it is a wise bride to be to include save the date cards in her wedding stationary and planning outline. Sending save a date cards are most efficient in aiding those you wish to share your wedding and reception, to keep the date of the wedding clear from any other planning.

Once you have your wedding date and location set, you should then have your save the date cards made. On the other hand, there are various save a date items, such as save a date magnets, save a date announcement cards as well as save a date scratch off cards. Save a date reminders come in many different themes, shapes and colors. You can match them to your other wedding stationary, or you can select something very different in themes, shapes and colors.

Hawaii is a first choice travel destination with millions of people - and for good reason. Bring a little of that island feeling into your home, either indoors or in your outdoor living space. You can apply this theme to an elegant dinner party, a fun and funky luau, or anything in between.

1. First, look at the space itself, including floors, walls, roof or ceiling.

Texture

Think natural materials. Try bamboo matting on the floor. It's fairly inexpensive, very durable and easy on the feet. For a roof or large patio umbrella, consider palm leaf thatch.

Color

Choose rich vibrant colors inspired by island vegetation: hibiscus red, bird of paradise orange or palm tree green. Use pineapple and mango colored accents. Bright navy or marine blue makes an effective background.

2. Next, add the furniture. Again, natural materials are best. For example, raffia table skirts and rattan or bamboo furniture are a fast way to create that island atmosphere. If you're using indoor dining chairs or resin patio chairs and want an elegant feel, consider slipovers made of a fabric with a Hawaiian print.

3. Now add lighting. Real flame, whether in candles or bamboo torches, will give you the most authentic look.

4. Last but not least, accessorize.

Motifs

When you think of Hawaii, you probably imagine palm trees swaying in the breeze, brightly colored exotic flowers, or maybe even hula dancers and surfboards. Each of these is an example of a motif.

Choose one motif and run with it, or mix a couple. Motifs with a common theme (such as Hawaii!) can be easily tied together by style or color.

Once you've picked a motif, you'll find lots of ideas for adding it to your room. From windsocks and stepping stones to tablecloths and salt & pepper shakers, the list of thematic accessories you can find is seemingly endless.

Don't overdo it though. Sometimes less is more, especially if you're decorating for a full season of living in the theme.

Music

Music is a powerful mood setter. CDs of traditional or contemporary island tunes can provide backdrop to conversation, or liven up the fun and games.

So pass around the leis and go Hawaiian in your outdoor space.

Miam.Miam Kaskade Glass Salt and Pepper Review

I over-shopped, both on-line and in stores, when I was looking for these. Really, I just needed a salt shaker because I had a pepper grinder. But when these showed up, my grinder got pushed to the back of the cupboard and only comes out when cooking or for pasta dishes. The shape is unique. The size is just right. The design demands you look closer, with the inner-cylinder holding the product while the outer-space creates the illusion of it floating. The best part? The pepper shaker has three holes instead of the standard one hole. Who can get enough pepper out of one hole? I can't say one bad thing about this product.
